The Nantahala River flows through the Nantahala Gorge in Macon and Swain counties of western North Carolina. Fed by cold dam releases, it is one of the most popular whitewater rivers in the Southeast, home to the Nantahala Outdoor Center and heavily used for rafting and kayaking.
