Nantahala Lake

Macon County, NC

Nantahala Lake is a man-made reservoir in Macon County, set within the Nantahala National Forest of far western North Carolina. Created in the 1940s on the Nantahala River for hydroelectric power and still managed by Duke Energy, it sits at over 3,000 feet, making it one of the highest lakes in the eastern United States. Much of its shoreline remains undeveloped because it borders protected federal land.
