Howard Gap is a historic mountain pass in the Polk County area named for Revolutionary War militia captain Thomas Howard. The gap and the old Howard Gap Road that crosses it were an important early route used by Native Americans and settlers to cross the Blue Ridge into the western North Carolina mountains.
