Cheoah River

Tapoco, NC

The Cheoah River is a steep, boulder-strewn run in Graham County between Santeetlah Dam and Lake Calderwood, near Tapoco. Normally a low-flow streambed, it becomes a demanding Class IV-V whitewater run during scheduled dam releases that Brookfield conducts roughly 20 times a year, drawing experienced paddlers from across the Southeast.
