The Catawba River rises in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western McDowell County, North Carolina, near Old Fort at the edge of the Pisgah National Forest. From these headwaters it drops over Catawba Falls before flowing east into Lake James, beginning a major river system that crosses into the Carolinas' Piedmont.
