Black Mountains
Yancey County, NC
The Black Mountains are a short but exceptionally high range straddling Yancey and Buncombe counties in western North Carolina, part of the Pisgah National Forest. Though only about fifteen miles long, the range includes several of the highest peaks in the eastern United States, crowned by Mount Mitchell, the highest point east of the Mississippi River. The range takes its name from the dark spruce and fir blanketing its slopes.
